Hey guys! For this weeks free blog choice I am going to be talking about a surfing video I found. I have been looking at a lot of surfing videos lately and I found a really cool one, check it out!
The start of this video is really cool. It starts out with dark music and a cool wave with the sound byte "It's probably one of the most, in my eyes, deadly waves in the world." After that it goes to an interview about how hard the wave is to surf. Then it goes to a different interview about how perfect the wave is. I think this builds the story very well. It also talks about how dangerous the reef below is and shows some really good b-roll of the reef. It has a little more of the interview and then shows some really cool videos of people surfing pipeline. The shots in this video are amazing, there is the colors are amazing and some are really slow and look super cool. It then talks about the history of legend surfers there and the amazing surfers that surf there right now. In conclusion this video has a really good story, is built perfectly, and has some amazing shots.
Hey guys! There is less than three weeks left of school. I am very excited because now I can go to the beach everyday in and not worry about homework. So for this weeks blog topic we were required to write three pieces of advice to the incoming media students in a "Dear Abby" form. My first piece of advice to the new students is to learn how to edit early on in the year. My second piece of advice is to learn how to use all equipment because you never know when you'll need it. And my final piece of advice is to get an SD card with a lot of space
"Dear Abby when should I learn how to edit?" This year I did not know how to edit for the two news story's. Kallen had taught me some of the complicated things but not really the basics. In third quarter Mr. M introduced vlogs. This helped me a lot, first of all I was required to edit every week. Although I did have to get some lessons from Ben on how to edit. Why I'm telling you this is because you don't want to be clueless on how to edit for your projects when your on your own.
"Dear Abby do I have to learn how to use all equipment?" I suggest that you have your partner teach you about all equipment. It was such a helpful thing that Kallen taught me how to use the Tascam. This way I could monitor my audio and I knew that I had a backup in case the recording to the camera failed. Kallen set up everything for the inside scoops throughout the year when it came time to do voice overs I didn't know how to use the yeti and I had to learn it from Kasey. You should learn how to use all equipment because you never know when you might need it.
"Dear Abby how big of an SD card should I get?" I went through this whole school year only using an 8 GB SD card. There were multiple times where I ran out of space and had to delete a lot of my footage. The scary part about having a small SD card is that you may run out of space in a middle of an interview and you have nothing to delete on your card. You would be stuck and would have to delete some important footage. My anwser ti this question is you should probably get a 32 or 64 GB SD card.
These are my three pieces of advice for incoming students. I think that these are all equally important. If you follow my advice you shouldn't have any problems with these subjects, if you don't then you are going to have major problems, trust me I've been through it. Media is hard work but following these simple directions will make it a lot easier.
Hey guys, for this week's blog I am going to be talking about my musical inspiration. With the recent death of prince I think we should acknowledge who we look up to because we don't know when anyone could pass away. My first musical inspiration is an artist named Chris Tomlin. My second musical inspiration would have to be Coldplay. And my final musical inspiration is Macklemore.
Chris Tomlin is a warship artist that has a lot of cool songs. In the beginning I heard his songs in church and loved them. I never knew who he was until I looked up his songs on YouTube. I found out that a lot of my favorite songs were actually written by a guy I have never heard of before. He has a wonderful voice and his songs are very complex in the writing. Chris’s music inspires me so much to write my own music and I love listening to it.
Coldplay has a wide variety of songs. They have some very complex planned out songs like viva la vida which are cool because they are very soothing to listen too. They also have songs like sky full of stars which I love because they are simple, easy to listen to, and have a great beat. In addition to that they have songs like Adventure Of A Lifetime which are more electronic. I also like Coldplay because their songs don't have bad meanings like most music these days. These are some of my favorite types of music so I love Coldplay. With all these different types of music it is easy to see that Coldplay is a very talented band.
Macklemore is by far my favorite rapper. He has really fun music and has a great beat. Can't hold us is one my favorite songs by him because I love the rapping and the chorus is also really fun to listen too. He also has songs like downtown which are fun because they have a story, and then the chorus is really cool and catchy. He also has other songs with stories like wings. I like songs with stories because you are taking your experiences and sharing them with the world.
In conclusion any artist that can produce music is very talented. These are my favorite musical inspirations. They all have great talent all in a unique way. There are other artist that I really like but I didn't include them in this list because they only had one really popular song. Prince was an amazing artist and it is important that we learn from old music because there is so much to learn.
Hey guys for this week's free blog I am going to be talking about a YouTube series I watch called “Who Is Job”. I love this series because it is very entertaining. I love surfing so it is really fun to see him, taking on massive waves. He also does some really dumb stuff that's very entertaining. Jamie O'brien (The Main Actor) is a professional surfer, he loves to do things out of the ordinary that other people think is too scary. The filming is also really good in this series. There are really good sequences and they edit it in away that keeps your interest. The stories are the best part though. In one episode he took a board shaped by a really famous surfer and took it to pipeline. The board was from the 70s and was one of a kind, it was so cool to see how peacefully he rode it. The editing was great in that video because it was really calm music. In conclusion “Who Is Job” is a great show.
Episodes: (Warning: Swearing and some inappropriate scenes)
Hey guys for this weeks blog I am going to be talking about the DJI phantom 3 standard. I am thinking about getting this drone. Here is a video of it.
I really like this drone because it is only 5 hundred dollars. Although this seems like a lot the DJI phantom 3 pro is 1,200 dollars. The only real difference is the video quality, the DJI phantom 3 pro has 4K and the standard has 2.7k. I think this is a good beginner drone because it is cheap but it still has the functionality of a professional drone. The other good thing about phantom drones is that they are very easy to fly. When you let go of the controller it hovers. And when it goes out of range or is running low on battery it will return to where it started. In conclusion the phantom 3 standard is a great drone for its price point.
Hey guys for this weeks blog I am going to talk about going out of my comfort zone. One day me and Dylan were going diving at Mahalepu. It was a big day but we decided to go out anyways. Three reasons we went out of our comfort zone was there was strong current, the waves were big, and there was a big fire at the end.
It all began with a normal day out in the water we were having fun and didn't really realize where we were. It turns out we were about an 8th of a mile from where we got in. When we tried to swim back we found that there was a really strong rip current. We also found out that the only way to get back on to land was the way we came in. Although we tried to find another way in the opposite way of the way we got in. We swam along the coast and finally found a spot we could rest for a while. On our way there we saw a tiger shark.
Getting up onto the spot where we could rest was the hardest part. The waves were pretty big and the sandstone was really sharp. With timing the waves correctly we finally got onto the place where we could rest although we had lots of cuts on our feet from the sandstone. We then realized we had two options. We could climb at straight up cliff (some parts were leaning over). Or we could swim to the shore. Dylan was really tired so we decided to climb the cliff. It was really hard to get up but we did it.
After that we got our stuff and headed out. On our way out we saw
Hey guys for this week's blog I'm going to talk about astrophotography. I would like to begin by saying that this is such a cool type of photography. Although you need to learn some things about it first. For my pictures I have been using a Sony Nex-5 with a 15-55 mm lens. When I first started this I was only adjusting my shutter speed and my shots weren't coming out very good. Here is a shot of my first attempt:
I began playing around with the settings a little and realized I was missing one key component, ISO. So I started playing around with that and found the perfect amount, 6000. Here is a shot with my ISO set higher:
When I looked at #astrophotography on Instagram I found that most people had really cool Milky Way shots and assumed that we didn't live in the right spot for that. I woke up at 4 one morning for a surf competition and walked out side. I saw a big bright Milky Way!! I was so excited so I grabbed my camera and started taking shots. Here is my shot of a Milky Way:
The camera that I use is a pretty cheap camera so this shows that no matter what equipment to can still get great shots if you know what you're doing.
Hey guys for this week's blog topic I'm going to be talking about my 3 most memorable of our STN 2016 trip to New York and Atlanta. My first memory and by far my favorite was going ice skating in Central Park. My second favorite was winning so many awards for STN. And my last but not least favorite memory was seeing Matilda on Broadway.
Ice skating was by far my favorite memory, it was just so fun. The first day when I went I was alright, I could skate pretty good but I was going pretty slow and was falling a lot. The second day when we came back I got a lot better. I was going really fast and barely falling at all. On the last day I also got to reach the people who were sick the first day.
My next favorite memory was winning the awards at STN. We won honorable mention for movie trailer and music video which was cool because I acted in both. We got second place for convention recap. We also got first place for anchoring, first place for commercial, and first place for short film. We also got second place for spot feature. It was really cool knowing that we placed in 7 of the 8 categories that we entered.
Seeing Matilda on Broadway was really cool. We first got to learn one of the dances from the play. Even though I did terrible it was really fun. Then we got to see the 8 year olds do it and I'm pretty sure we felt bad about our dance. The acting was really good and they did they play in a really cool way.
In conclusion there were so many amazing memorable moments in our trip I can't name them all. I also really enjoyed the basketball game. In addition six flags was so much fun. Although nothing could beat ice skating. I had so much fun in that trip and I want to give a hug thanks to Mr. M for taking us on that amazing journey.
Hey guys! For this week's free blog I am going to be talking about a movie I saw called Risen. Here's the trailer:
I think Sony did a really good job on this movie. There were some cool underwater shots that added to the dramatic effect. There was also really good acting in this movie sometimes when I watch a good movie I feel like I'm actually in the movie, this was one of those movies. I also really liked the plot of this movie, it was at a pace where you were wondering what was going to happen next the whole time. They also did a good job on the costumes, all the outfits seem to fit the time period. Risen was a really good movie, including good shots, good plot, and appropriate costumes.
Hey guys! For this weeks blog topic Mr. M Wanted us to talk about stress. One thing that stresses me out is media because there is a lot of work to do especially with deadlines. To get off my stress I usually go surfing. Stress has many meanings one meaning to me is it is when you have so much to do and you have to do it by a certain time.
Media stresses me out because there are lots of deadlines that are sometimes hard to meet. For example me and Kallen always just barely meet the deadlines for inside scoops. Kallen also lost his hard drive for our first quarter project so we were like a month late. STN practices also stress me out a lot because I have no idea what the editing is like so I'm not sure if our video is good or bad. Media stresses me out a lot.
To get my mind away from stress I usually go out in the ocean and surf. I think this is very calming because the whole time you have your mind on the waves. You are also having lots of fun which also take your mind off stress. I also go with my friends so when i catch a good wave they are cheering me on and that also helps get my mind off stress.
To me stress is when you have lots of work to do and you don't have a lot of time to do it. This is one reason homework stresses me out because I don't want to rush because I will not do a good job but it takes me a long time. Media is also a good example of this. There are lots of deadlines that are easy to meet if you don't procrastinate. The only thing is I procrastinate a lot.
There are lots of thing that stress me out. Media is one of the biggest things that stresses me out. To get my mind of stress I go surfing because it is fun and you are only thinking about the waves. Stress means to have lots of work to do and you have a close deadline.
My name is Erik I am currently in 6th grade. In my free time I like getting videos of waves, and putting them together to make edits. I also like taking pictures of waves.
